What is a(n) XLA file?

XLA (Excel Add-In Format) is a type of file used in Microsoft Excel to store macros, UI customization, and other add-in program definitions. This file is in a semi-compiled binary format that has been extensively used to improve the speed of loading and executing macros or routines.

Due to the semi-compiled format of XLA file, it cannot be read or modified by ordinary text or programming editors, but can be edited using the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming environment.
