A WAR (Web application archive) file is a Java archive file that can be packaged and distributed for the use of a web-application. It is a compressed version of a WAR (Web Archive) folder which contains all the compiled files, such as Java Server Pages, HTML pages, servlets, classes and libraries, associated with the web-application. These files are collected together in one compressed folder to make deployment and testing easier for web-application developers and users.

WAR files are typically deployed to various web servers such as Apache Tomcat or Jetty web server, or to standalone application servers like WebLogic or WebSphere for the purpose of distributing applications that run within a servlet container. WAR files can also be deployed in cloud environment such as AWS Elastic BeanStalk. Once an application is deployed in these platforms, the browser interacts with it to access data, files, images and other types of content from the hosted web application.
