What is a(n) VMDK file?

The VMDK format is used by VMware, a system virtualization software. VMDK files are a virtual disk, which is a hard disk for a virtual machine. The user can set the size of the VMDK file to be fixed or allow the user to dynamically allocate space. The VMDK format replaced the older DSK extension.

How to open VMDK file?
