What is a(n) VID file?

VID or Generic Video File is a file type used to store video clips. These files are typically compressed using codecs such as H.264, MPEG-4, or Xvid and may contain audio and subtitles. The VID format can also store titles, chapters, and other metadata information for playback. VID files are most commonly used for internet streaming services such as YouTube and Vimeo.

VID files can be opened with a variety of media players including QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and VLC Media Player as well as many other third party programs. Video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro or CyberLink PowerDirector have the ability to open, modify, and export these file types. Additionally, any file converter applications can be used to convert .vid files to other video formats.
