What is a(n) PMD file?

PMD (PageMaker Document) files are document files used by the desktop publishing program, Adobe PageMaker. Created as a rival to the popular QuarkXPress application, Adobe PageMaker allowed users to design layouts for documents that were collected from photographs, artwork, text and charts. They often feature pages with varying orientations, all connected together to form one cohesive document. PMD files are usually saved in versions 5 or 6, but can also be exported in other formats such as PDF.

Adobe PageMaker was discontinued after version 7.0 and as a result PMD files are no longer actively developed or supported. Fortunately, a free third-party converter is available online which allows users to open, view and save PMD files in other file types, including PDF, HTML and RTF.

Step 1. Find and download then install appropriate software

Typically in order to open .PMD files it is sufficient to follow these simple steps: find, download, and install appropriate software. Then, by double-clicking on the file icon, open the file. Step 2. Verify whether the PMD file is not infected with malware

If given file with PMD extension is not infected, it is possible that the antivirus software is blocking access to the file. If the size of the original file differs from the size of downloaded PMD file, you will have to download the file again.

Step 4. Verify whether PMD files are associated with proper software

If the system registry has no entry related to default program that should be used to open PMD files, even though given program is installed on the system, then PMD files must be associated with the application in question.

Associating files with applications is performed similarly regardless of the type of system and consists in selecting an application which should be used for opening given type of files. In order to associate PMD files with given application, right-click the file icon and select form the context menu "Open with" option, which will display a list of suggested programs. Select your program from the list. If the application is not on the list, use the "Browse" button and point to the location of the application. Checking "Always use selected application to open this kind of files" option will set selected application as the default application for opening given files.

Step 5. Verify whether the storage medium on which the PMD files is stored is not damaged or corrupted

It is possible that the storage medium on which the file is located is damaged or corrupted. Try scanning the storage medium for errors.
