What is a(n) OGG file?

OGG (Ogg Vorbis Audio Format) is a Lossy audio format developed by Xiph, which is an open source multimedia organization. It uses the traditional Vorbis audio compression technology to reduce the file size while still maintaining decent sound quality. OGG files are smaller than most other audio formats like MP3 and WAV, and provide flexibility in regarding to music sharing or streaming over the internet.

OGG files store metadata which can include Title, Artist, Album, Track Number, and Genre information. They support 8 to 1411 kHz sample rates with up to at least 8 channels for surround sound. OGG files can be opened with all modern media players such as Apple QuickTime player, Windows Media Player, and Winamp.

There could be multiple reasons for which the system does not support given file. In the case of OGG extension, it is probable that none of the installed programs support given file type. Therefore, user should undertake the following steps

Step 1: Install a program that supports OGG files

If an application that supports OGG files is installed on user’s system, but is not used to open such files by default, right-click on the file icon and choose "Open with" option from the menu. Next, select the proper application and check the "Always use the selected application to open this kind of files" box. The system will store this information in its registry and use the selected program to open files with OGG extension by default.
