What is a(n) NKI file?
The NKI (KONTAKT Instrument Format) file is a file format that enables saving and loading of sampled instruments created by Native Instruments' KONTAKT sampling and sound design application. It contains the settings of a patch (preset), including key zones, audio samples, effects controller assignments, mod routings, and other settings. An NKI file is used to share an instrument or a patch with other users so that they can use it in their own projects.
NKI files can be used as plug-ins to integrate an instrument into a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Alternatively, they can be saved and managed independently on its own plugin or in the Kontakt Library Manager. NKI files are typically saved in the proprietary NKi file format with a .nki extension and can be opened with Kontakt Player or the full version of Kontakt.
