What is a(n) NBU file?

The NBU (Nokia Phone Backup Format) is a backup and restore file created by the Nokia PC Suite application. It stores phone-related data such as contacts, calendar events, text messages, notes, folders and web settings. The NBU format is used by Nokia phones for backing up user data stored on the device in order to store it in a safe place on the computer. It is used to restore user data after a reset or upgrade of the phone.

NBU files are encrypted and saved with an NBU extension. This file format is not viewable in regular text editors and requires the Nokia PC Suite application to access its contents. The NBU format also allows users to transfer their phone's content to another device as long as both the old and new device have the Nokia PC Suite installed.
