What is a(n) MPO file?

The MPO (Multi Picture Object Format) file format is developed primarily for 3D imaging devices and cameras. It is a JPEG-based format that stores a pair of two or more 2D-JPEG pictures in a single file. It supports different components for left- and right-eye views, as well as different data like Depth Map, which is used to convert two-dimensional images into 3D images. It also allows embedded Exif metadata to remain intact.

MPO files are often used to store anaglyph images, which contain color-coded images for each eye, used by 3D glasses for an immersive viewing experience. The MPO image format is supported by some image viewers and 3D TVs, giving photographers the opportunity to share their images with a wider audience.
