What is a(n) IMG file?
IMG (Macintosh Disk Image) is a type of disk image file created by Apple Macintosh computers to package software. Using the Apple Disk Copy utility, an exact copy of a hard drive volume, CD/DVD or floppy disks can be saved as an IMG file. It allows users to store entire applications, along with their data and other related files, in a single self-contained file.
The IMG file is an image of that exact same data and can be mounted on the computer virtual drive or sent directly to another user. In addition, it can be used to create a bootable disk if it contains an operating system. IMG files can also be opened and converted into other well-known disk image formats, such as ISO or DMG.
