What is a(n) DBS file?

DBS (SQLBase Database Format) is a database file format developed by SYBASE and used in their SQLBase relational database management system. It stores the information necessary for the underlying database engine to process and manage structured data including tables, table structures, data types, stored procedures, triggers and views.

DBS files generally take the form of a shared-memory file which enables multiple users to access it simultaneously. These files can be read and modified using ODBC drivers as well as through direct SQL commands. Certain data types such as timestamp fields are not supported for modification but can be accessed by querying the file directly.
