What is a(n) AUP file?

The AUP (Audacity Project Format) file format is used for storing music and audio projects created with Audacity, a free, open-source digital audio editor. It stores an Audacity project's labels, waveforms, envelope points, tempo, pitch, and other data in a single file. AUP files can also store the mixing details and effects applied to tracks during the project. The AUP file format is closely related to the XML (Extensible Markup Language) standard.

While AUP files cannot be opened directly with other applications, they can be converted to other formats like MP3 or WAV for wider compatibility with media players. Alternatively, Audacity projects can also be exported and shared as standalone archives (.ZIP files), which include a copy of the original AUP track and all external files it references.
