What is a(n) AAC file?

The Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) file format is an emerging audio compression technology designed for high-quality digital audio streaming and playback. AAC files are supported by many modern audio players including the iPod, iPhone, and iPad; they also offer better sound quality than the popular MP3 format. AAC is different from other types of audio files in that it features variable bit rate encoding, which allows for increased compression while maintaining high-fidelity audio.

The AAC file format is also featured in select online video streaming services such as Hulu. It can be encoded with higher bit rates than other audio formats to ensure clarity and dynamic range. In addition, it's optimized for low-latency streaming due to its frame structure, making it ideal for voice communication and other real-time applications.
